Ottoman Empire

Founded in 1299 by a Turk named Osman I, the empire expanded Muslim control and conquered the historic city of Constantinople, renaming it as Istanbul. The Ottoman Empire came to an end in 1922, but remains influential as the modern-day country of Turkey.

Holy Lands

The Holy Lands, centered on the city of Jerusalem, have been very important in the history of Judaism, Christianity (and its various sects), and Islam. At some points in history they have been shared, while at many other times they have been fought over in “religious” wars.
