A companion book is a guide or a handbook that goes with a picture book, graphic novel, or manga. It can do any of the following:
- provide insight into certain topics in the book
- shine a spotlight on particular details/events in the book
- give background about characters or parts of the book
- explain/clarify deeper meanings behind aspects of the book
