G08: Civil Wars around the world: Ethiopia

A guide to major (non USA) Civil Wars in Modern history

Overview Ethiopia

The Ethiopian civil war is primarily a power struggle between the federal government and the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF), the dominant political force in the northern Tigray region. The conflict erupted in November 2020 when the federal government accused the TPLF of attacking a military base and seeking to overthrow the government. The TPLF denies these allegations and argues that the government is trying to marginalize and silence their voices. The conflict has been marked by atrocities committed by both sides, including massacres of civilians and widespread displacement. The power dynamics of the conflict have been influenced by regional and ethnic divisions within Ethiopia, with some other ethnic groups supporting the government's crackdown on the TPLF while others have criticized the government's response and called for dialogue. The conflict has also drawn in external actors, with neighboring countries such as Sudan and Eritrea getting involved and international organizations such as the African Union and United Nations seeking to mediate a resolution.
