The ancient and modern city of Corinth is located in south-central Greece. The site has been occupied since Neolithic times—well before 3000 bc.

Corinth was a Greek, Hellenistic and Roman city located on the isthmus which connects mainland Greece with the Peloponnese. Surrounded by fertile plains and blessed with natural springs, ancient Corinth was a centre of trade, had a naval fleet and participated in various Greek wars.

Corinth was a city-state (polis) on the Isthmus of Corinth, the narrow stretch of land that joins the Peloponnese to the mainland of Greece, roughly halfway between Athens and Sparta.

According to legend, the Fountain of Peirene was initially formed by the great winged horse Pegasus who struck the ground with his hoof, cracking the earth open. The cavern was filled by the water nymph, Peirene, who wept so much after the loss of her son that she simply dissolved into the spring, creating an eternal source of water.
