Librarian to Librarian 2023

THEME

International School Librarianship in Changing Times

KEYNOTE: Diverse Picturebooks for Diverse Children: A Booklist for Culturally Sustaining Pedagogies

OUR KEYNOTE SPEAKER: Dr. Rhoda Myra Garces-Bacsal

The continued “rise of migration, immigration, and remigration” (Auzina, 2018, p. 25) has now transformed classrooms into spaces for intercultural connections among children with multiple, hybrid, intersecting identities. This presentation aims to expand educators’ pedagogical toolkit (Ford et al., 2019) through the critical sharing of diverse picturebooks that are found to be effective in translating the tenets of culturally responsive (Haddix & Price-Dennis, 2012) and sustaining (Alim & Paris, 2017) pedagogies, as they navigate cultural prejudices and stereotyping (Robinson, 2013) and provide spaces to cultivate liberatory educators for a decolonial teacher education (Dominguez, 2017). Participants will be introduced to text-sets from around the world that engage in ‘restorying’ (Thomas, 2022) or counter-storytelling that serve to reclaim dignity, grace, and joy among marginalized communities and people of color.

OVERVIEW

Inspired by the The Librarians Knowledge Sharing Workshop (LKSW) in Southeast Asia, Librarian to Librarian is an annual professional development event for teacher-librarians and librarians who lead international schools libraries in the Middle East / Africa / European area.

Its mission is to provide a welcoming environment for sharing and learning, where the delegates are the presenters together with additional keynote speakers, who are willing to give their time, at a minimal cost, to support this initiative.

Following the LKSW philosophy it is important that participation fees are kept low so that those working in less well-funded schools are not deterred from participation.
