Context - War in Syria

Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), Arabic al-Dawlah al-Islāmiyyah fī al-ʿIrāq wa al-Shām, Arabic acronym Dāʿish or Daesh, also called Islamic State.  It is a Sunni insurgent group operating primarily in western Iraq and eastern Syria.

The Syrian Civil War, which began as an uprising against the regime of President Bashar al-Assad in early 2011, provided opportunities for ISIL fighters to take advantage of wartime chaos and cross from Iraq into eastern Syria.

In April 2013, ISIL gained control of eastern areas of Syria, using Raqqa as a capital or base. ISIL imposed a strict version of Islamic law and emphasized brutal treatment of its enemies and all those it deemed to be violators of Islamic law. ISIL also seized oil refineries in the region and sold oil on the black market to raise money for its cause. (Source: Britannica)
