G4: Poetry Unit: Figurative Language

What is figurative language?

Figurative language, or figures of speech, say one thing and mean something else.

Instead of saying what we mean--with plain language--writers and speakers sometimes use phrases or expressions that suggest images, feelings, or ideas.

These sayings add a hidden message that the audience, or listeners, bring to the language.
