Information Literacy: AI as a Tool

Acknowledging AI Use in Student Work

AI Usage in Research

Students should avoid using AI as a source of factual information. When AI is used as part of a research process, its use must be acknowledged and may need to be cited, based on the type of AI usage, specific assignment, and citation style used

Disclosing Usage for School Work

If AI is permitted to be used in a project (for text, image, data analysis, or any other use), teachers will include instructions about how students will disclose their AI use according to the Generative AI Acceptable Use Scale:

  • Write a statement at the end of the submitted work which discloses any use of AI tools to complete the final project. Sample statement: “For this assignment I used (AI tools) to do (tasks).”

  • Share conversations with the AI tool with the submitted work so that the teacher can evaluate the learning process and how the student partnered with the generative AI model to create the final project.  AI conversations can be shared by either adding the share link to the chat or using the ShareGPT extension for Chrome.

  • Share a link to the pre-edited work (before AI use).

  • Cite the AI use in Noodletools following the guidelines of the citation style used. (Noodletools provides an AI form.)

No AI Use:

If a teacher has specifically stated that AI is not to be used in a project, the teacher may wish all students to state something like:  “All work presented is my own.  I have not used generative AI at any point in this project/essay.
